Balance or coordination problems
Difficulty with daily activities
Reduced functional independence
Understanding Paralysis

How Paralysis Can Affect Daily Function

The effects of paralysis vary widely. Rehabilitation is therefore individualised according to the person's diagnosis, abilities, medical status, movement limitations and functional goals.

💪

Strength

Reduced strength may make standing, walking, transferring or using the arms more difficult.

⚖️

Balance

Some people may experience reduced balance and difficulty maintaining safe body control during movement.

🚶

Mobility

Walking, transfers and movement around the home may require rehabilitation and appropriate support.

Physiotherapy Rehabilitation

What Rehabilitation May Focus On

The programme is selected according to assessment findings, medical advice and the individual's rehabilitation goals.

💪

Strength Training

Progressive exercises may help maintain or improve available muscle strength.

🦵

Mobility

Movement exercises can help maintain joint mobility and support functional movement.

⚖️

Balance Training

Exercises may target sitting, standing and dynamic balance where appropriate.

🚶

Walking Training

Where appropriate, therapy may work on gait, transfers, walking efficiency and safe mobility.

🤲

Upper Limb Function

Rehabilitation may focus on reaching, grasping and functional use of the affected arm.

🏠

Daily Activities

Therapy can address practical tasks such as transfers, dressing and safe movement around the home.

Rehabilitation Process

A Step-by-Step Approach

The rehabilitation plan may change as movement, strength and functional abilities develop.

1

Assessment

Understand movement, strength, balance and functional needs.

2

Goal Setting

Identify meaningful and realistic rehabilitation goals.

3

Exercise

Introduce appropriate mobility, strength and control exercises.

4

Functional Training

Practise movements relevant to everyday activities.

5

Progress Review

Monitor function and adapt rehabilitation as appropriate.

Patient Guidance

Helpful Rehabilitation Principles

Every person's condition is different. Follow the rehabilitation plan provided by the treating healthcare professionals.

✓ Do

  • Follow your personalised rehabilitation programme.
  • Practise recommended exercises consistently.
  • Use prescribed walking or mobility aids correctly.
  • Keep family or caregivers involved when appropriate.
  • Report changes in symptoms or function.

! Avoid

  • Do not force movements beyond your safe ability.
  • Do not begin difficult exercises without appropriate guidance.
  • Do not ignore new or worsening neurological symptoms.
  • Do not stop prescribed medical treatment without medical advice.
  • Do not compare your recovery with another person's recovery.

⚠️ Important Medical Information

Paralysis can result from conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, neurological disorders and other medical causes. The underlying cause should be medically evaluated and managed by the appropriate healthcare team.

Sudden new weakness or paralysis, particularly involving the face or arm, difficulty speaking, severe sudden headache, confusion or other sudden neurological symptoms may require urgent medical attention. Do not delay emergency medical care to arrange physiotherapy.

Start Your Rehabilitation Journey

If paralysis is affecting movement, balance, strength or everyday function, an appropriate physiotherapy assessment can help identify rehabilitation priorities and functional goals.
